And the job search continues... [Apr. 23rd, 2008|12:53 am]
1. Boeing has decided not to grant me an interview.
2. The photography place has decided they don't want me as their "photoshop guy".
3. "Video Store Clerk" is apparently not enough to qualify for other retail jobs.
4. Not one of my photos up at Barnes & Noble has sold. They're only $30. They've been up for a whole month.
5. Tomorrow I fully expect to lose at the lottery again.

I Can Has Macintosh! [Jan. 20th, 2008|02:42 pm]
After saving, scraping, and some generous donations from friends, I now have an exact duplicate of my Mac (via ebay)!

Yay!

*bounce* *bounce* *bounce*

... it's not really an exact duplicate -- this one has twice the RAM! Woo!

Requiem for a Mac [Nov. 28th, 2007|05:40 pm]
I just put in the new power supply and hit the power button.

Nothing. The machine is dead.

Digital photography, video editing, music composition... gone.

A new Mac costs around $2700.

Shit.

The Week of Suck [Nov. 15th, 2007|06:59 pm]
About a week ago: So I'm doing my dorky computer stuff on my Mac. I go out for a cigarette. I come back in to find a powered-off computer and the HappyFun smell of burnt electronics.

The power supply's fan had died, causing it to overheat.

The downside to Macintosh computers: they use non-standard parts. I had just paid my cell phone and internet bills, leaving me with juuuuust barely enough money for food. I manage to find a friend willing to lend me $100 for the part! Yay! I put the cash in my wallet and order a new power supply from the one place in town that works on macs.

There's roughly a week's wait. I'm feverently hoping that the power supply didn't take any system components with it when it blew -- I can't afford a new mac.

Fast-forward to today. No power supply yet. Maybe in a day or two.

I go get coffee. Come back to the house. Fiddle around with my Linux install that had decided to go totally wonky.

It's up and running.

I decide to celebrate with something that contains a lot of sugar, so I grab my coat and my w....

Where the fuck is my wallet?

I look everywhere. I clean my room. I dig through every nook and cranny. I retrace my steps to the gas station I get my coffee at -- where I last used my wallet.

They don't have it. It's nowhere to be seen.

My food money? Gone. The $100 I borrowed for the power supply? Gone. ATM card? Gone.

Now I've got no money for a few days until my next paycheck -- the one I have to pay rent with. I have no functional Macintosh and no way to pay for the part I need to get it to work. This means no photography. No video editing. No music composition. No simulated-world-with-evolving-critters. Nothing.

I call and get my ATM card cancelled.

Now I sit here, just waiting for the next catastrophe to hit.

This Almost Got Me Arrested [Jun. 11th, 2007|01:19 am]
This Almost Got Me Arrested

A block away from where I took this picture I was stopped by a police officer. He gets out of his car, assumes the 'cop posture', and walks over to me. "What's that you got there?", he asks.

"Camera!", I reply.

He gets an accusatory tone in his voice. "What are you taking pictures of?"

"Raindrops in a ditch", I say cheerfully.

He just... looks at me.

"Raindrops in a ditch, huh?"

"Yeah! You wanna see 'em?"

I pull out my camera and start flipping through the pictures. A look of complete and total non-comprehension crosses his face and he starts to laugh. I actually was taking pictures of raindrops in a ditch.

He tells me that just across the ditch is the Missoula pre-release and corrections facility. They saw some guy with telephoto lens outside, panicked, and called the police. "There's some guy taking pictures of the facility! Oh noes!"

He gets back in his car, still laughing, and drives off.
